Nexus S teardown reveals flat LCD, NFC antenna

Hardware otherwise similar to Galaxy S

The crew at iFixit has already dissected the Nexus S handset, borne of direct collaboration between Google and Samsung. The teardown reveals a list of internal components mostly similar to other high-end Android offerings already on the market, but with a few interesting additions. The handset shares many of the same features as Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones, including a 1GHz ARM A8 Hummingbird processor and AMOLED display.

The "contour display" is one of the few features that differentiates the Nexus S from the rest of the crowd, but the teardown shows that the curved geometry is only applied to the glass itself. The 800x480 LCD and touchscreen are both flat, like any other handset.

Other than the curved display, the device integrates a unique NFC module that adheres to the back cover. The motherboard design was also described as "peculiar," as its inner perimeter wraps around the entire battery.

iFixit gave the Nexus S a repairability score of seven out of 10, citing potential difficulties using a heat gun to separate the display from the frame. Samsung also fused the LCD to the glass, requiring users to replace both at the same time, while the earpiece speaker, speakerphone speaker, and sensor bank are also tied into a single unit.

The Android 2.3 phone is currently available unlocked and contract-free for $530, or subsidized through T-Mobile for $200 with a two-year agreement.
