Google Nexus S goes on sale at Best Buy

updated 09:20 am EST, Thu December 16, 2010

Google Nexus S on sale as promised

Best Buy as promised began selling the Nexus S. The first-ever Android 2.3 phone is available either online or at retail for $200 on a two-year T-Mobile contract. In-store visitors can also get an unlocked, contract-free version for $530, although its 3G only supports T-Mobile as well as some Canadian and European carriers.

Those adding a second line with a contract pay $250.

The device is a mild upgrade to the Galaxy S but is the first ever phone to ship with Android 2.3, giving it a multi-touch keyboard with better copy-and-paste text, better multitasking and built-in VoIP calling. Google insists on a stock build and thus promises a faster OS and more frequent updates than Samsung can deliver with its custom UI.

In hardware, it has a unique curved four-inch Super AMOLED display and has 16GB of storage built-in, but no microSDHC slot. A gyroscope and NFC wireless are also new and there to support apps when they take advantage of the new features.
