Review: MacKeeper system maintenance utility

updated 07:50 pm EST, Wed December 15, 2010

Combines many utilities in one package

Zeobit's MacKeeper positions itself as an all-around utility package, offering not just routine Mac maintenance but scheduled backups, data encryption, "undelete" options, an app "slimmer," anti-virus and anti-theft features, secure deletion of files, a duplicate finder, an automatic app updater, a login item and default app manager and even professional-grade tech support. Is it a jack of all trades, master of none -- or the one utility package to rule them all? Our review gives the program a workout and reports the results.

    Feathers' Review

Another bogus application that reproduces functions available in more reliable and cheaper form elsewhere. Additionally, the supposedly unique features don't work properly. This software is still very much in beta and should not even be sold as ready-to-wear. Whether you choose to buy and use this application can be determined by answering a simple question: Would you trust critical tasks such as encryption, back-up and recovery to software written by an unknown company with no proven history of writing software for the Mac? I think that pretty much sums things up.

That does not really about sum things up...

What would is if you actually mentioned what are the "more reliable and cheaper" programs with the same functions available elsewhere for those of us who don't already have that knowledge.

Yes, put up or shut up

I haven't used MacKeeper so I only know what the review says, but ... I'd love to hear about the tool (or collection of tools) that match MacKeeper feature-for-feature for $40. I'm aware of a few free tools, but I'm certainly unaware of free or low-cost matches for each area MacKeeper seem to work in.
