Pioneer ships first internal BDXL drive in the US

Pioneer is now shipping the first BDXL-standard internal Blu-ray drive introduced in October. The BDR-206MBK is capable of reading and writing BDXL media that can hold up to 128GB of data in quad-layer discs or 100GB in triple-layer media. Quality is also enhanced as accuracy is increased and artificial noise is limited.

Pioneer's Limit Equalizer technology improves the quality by improving RF signals generated when reading data. The Disc Vibration Stabilizer helps to keep the disc from warping during the write process, for example.

As expected, the drive remains backwards compatible with CDs, DVDs and traditional Blu-ray discs. CyberLink software for Windows users comes bundled with the drive, as is one blank 100GB BD-R XL disc. The drive has a SATA interface. The BDXL drive is now shipping for $200.
