3 UK to uncap its 3G Internet access

3 UK to start unlimited 3G access on Wednesday

UK provider 3 on Tuesday promised it would offer unlimited mobile web access, instead of the current industry practice to cap and charge overages. Some analysts believe that if the move from Britain's fourth largest carrier gives it market share, others will follow suit, the International Herald Tribune claimed on Tuesday.

The unlimited plan will remain confined to Britain, despite the carrier also operating in Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Austria. To date, 3 plans start at the equivalent of nearly $40 per month and has a limit of 1GB per month, with each megabyte over that costing about $0.20. The new plan, which goes online on Wednesday, will eliminate the extra charges.

3 offers tethering with its plans, so the unlimited plan may prove very popular and put a strain on the carrier's network. It's not known whether 3 will throttle speeds for users who take full advantage of the new deal and download copious amount of data. The provider already has the reputation for offering the lowest-priced plans in the industry in Britain and is already offering 15GB iPad data plans, or several times what all it competitors have.
