CrashPlan+ updated to v3, adds multiple backup sets

updated 05:55 pm EST, Wed December 8, 2010

Simplified pricing & verify-on-demand also added

Code 42 Software has streamlined and updated its CrashPlan+ to v3 for Mac, Linux, Solaris and Windows. The online backup service and software now allows multiple backup sets and more flexible scheduling, adds recognition of new computers and devices, offers the ability to scan and verify backed-up files on demand and simplifies the pricing structure for paid customers.

Though the company still offers their basic CrashPlan cross-platform backup software to non-business users for free (which allows multiple computers to back up to local resources such as external hard drives), the new pricing structure gives online storage buyers three CrashPlan+ options: 10GB (tied to one computer) for $25/year, unlimited storage from one computer for $50/year, and a "Family Unlimited" options that allows unlimited data from every computer in a household for $120/year.

The paid options remove ads from the free version of the CrashPlan software, and CrashPlan+ (now included with all consumer paid plans) offers a continuous background backup option (or flexible, scheduled backups); a web-based restore ability; mix-and-match backup sets from multiple operating systems; 448-bit encryption and archive tampering detection, and live email, chat or phone support.

All current paid customers will be automatically upgraded to the appropriate CrashPlan+ level via routine software update. New uses can try CrashPlan+ free for 30 days. The company also offers its CrashPlanPRO service to businesses.
