Runs Android 2.2, aimed at first time users

U.S. Cellular has announced that it will be launching the LG Optimus U on December 13. The Android 2.2 smartphone is being pitched at first time users. The device centers on a 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen and uses a virtual keyboard featuring Swype input. In addition to standard Google Android apps, U.S. Cellular has installed the Your Navigator Deluxe app for voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation.

The LG Optimus U is a U.S. Celluar variant of the recently launched LG Optimus Sdesigned for the Sprint network. Like the Optimus S, the Optimus U is equipped with a microSD card slot for up to 32GB of storage. It also incorporates a 3.2-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi with built-in hotspot capabilities. In keeping with its entry-level pricing, it runs a 600MHz processor that should still keep the experience smooth.

The LG Optimus U will be free after an $80 mail-in rebate on a two-year contract.
