Nexus S may drop AMOLED for LCD outside of US, UK

updated 11:55 am EST, Wed December 8, 2010

Nexus S to get LCD instead of AMOLED in the UK?

The Nexus S handset officially revealed just Monday for the US and UK will arrive in other markets next year but may have a key display technology change, according to Samsung Russia. Instead of the Super AMOLED display of the US and UK versions, it will ship with the Super Clear LCD shared with newer Wave phones. While the 4-inch Super Clear LCD isn't said to sacrifice much in terms of display quality, it does use up more energy than its AMOLED counterpart.

Other European countries are also expected to receive the Super Clear LCD. The swap most likely stems from Samsung's very limited AMOLED production capacity, which already forced HTC to use LCDs after it saved the AMOLED screens for its own Galaxy S and original Wave phones.

The Nexus S will be the first handset to ship with Android 2.3, and the screen has a resolution of 480x800 whether it's the AMOLED or the LCD. It gets Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a near field communications chip for wireless payments, and assisted GPS. A 1GHz Hummingbird processor and five-megapixel camera are also present. In the US, the phone will cost $200 on a two-year T-Mobile plan or $529 unlocked when it arrives on December 16. [via UnwiredView]
