Google outs Crankshaft for V8 to boost JavaScript

Google on Tuesday announced a new compilation infrastructure for V8, the JavaSript engine in Google Chrome. Called Crankshaft, it is said to more than double the speed of JavaScript apps in most cases, such as when loading web pages and applications created with complex JavaScript. Benchmark tests reveal that Richards, DeltaBlue and Crypto get the most benefits.

Crankshaft boosts V8 performance by 50 percent on the V8 benchmark suite, and is said to offer the biggest performance jump since Chrome was launched in 2008. It's said to improve the start-up time of web apps such as Gmail, and page cycler tests improve load performance in Chrome by 12 percent in pages with a significant amount of JavaScript code.

The boosts were attained thanks to adaptive compilation. Benchmarks that take a few milliseconds to execute, such as SunSpider, don't benefit as much with Crankshaft due to their small size. Crankshaft heavily optimizes code that's frequently used and does not concern itself with optimizing code that isn't. The more work an app does the bigger the gains will be, Google said.

A V8 engine with Crankshaft for Intel's 32-bit processor architecture is now available and should be in developer versions of Chrome. The ARM and 64-bit versions are currently under development.
