Samsung Epic 4G, first Galaxy S to receive Android 2.2 in US

updated 04:50 am EST, Sun December 5, 2010

Sprint servers pushing OTA update to handsets

The Samsung Epic 4G is the first Galaxy S series phone in the US to receive an Android 2.2 update in the US. Sprint is pushing the official Samsung TouchWiz UI skinned over-the-air (OTA) update through its servers and it is slowly working its way around the country. Despite releasing its iteration of Samsung's Galaxy S phone after AT&T's Samsung Captivate and T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy S I9000, Sprint has managed to get its official Android update out the door before the other carriers as it did with HTC's EVO 4G.

Early reports suggest that the build is in fact Android 2.2.1, while previously leaked updates for Vibrant, Captivate and I9000 have been for version 2.2. Its build code of DK28 is thought to indicate that it may only have been finalized as recently as November 28.

The 2.2.1 for the Epic 4G update will bring with it Adobe Flash 10.1 compatibility, an Android Market with auto-updating, a pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover, improved default keyboard and quicklinks to GP and auto-rotation toggles among other enhancements.

Instructions on how to install the update have been posted by xdadevelopers. [via BriefMobile]
