Apple uses Michael Jackson song to lure people to Ping

updated 11:45 am EST, Thu December 2, 2010

Social network remains relatively marginal

Hoping to draw more attention to the Ping social network, Apple is offering early access to a previously unheard Michael Jackson song. Called "Much Too Soon," the track is from an upcoming collection simply called Michael. The album will be available through iTunes on December 14th; to hear Much Too Soon, though, people can currently stream it from the official Michael Jackson Ping profile.

Ping remains a relatively marginal social network. Although it reached over 1 million users in 48 hours, Apple has not released any updated figures since, and the network is not much discussed on the web. Business Insider is currently calling Ping one of 2010's "Biggest Flops in Tech."

    Much too stupid

to hear Much Too Soon, though, people can currently stream it from the official Michael Jackson Ping profile.

The ol' "Well, no one's using our product. Let's try to trick them into using it!" philosophy. Like signing up for an email newsletter to enter a contest or something.

Ping remains a relatively marginal social network. Although it reached over 1 million users in 48 hours,

Of course it did. Apple made it, so all the fanboys had to sign up for it immediately to check it out.

Apple has not released any updated figures since,

Uh-oh. Well, maybe that's because Apple doesn't like to toot it's own horn until the next big milestone, like 500 million subscribers.

and the network is not much discussed on the web.

Of course it isn't. No one does 'the web' anymore. But is it talked about much on Facebook or Twitter, that's what is important!

Business Insider is currently calling Ping one of 2010's "Biggest Flops in Tech."

Could be worse. It could be eWorld! "Hello! Is anyone here!"

And perhaps if Apple didn't try to just jam it down everyone's throats ("Let's put Ping everywhere in iTunes! That way we'll be sure to use it!"), people might have cozied up to it. But when you basically turn your praised Music app (which has already been turned into a music/video/podcast/book/app management system with music/podcast/audiobook and semi-video playback capabilities, plus your Apple device management app for managing content on your devices) into a gigantic advertisement pushing your new online services, people tend to get annoyed.

    Obvious bad joke...

Apple uses Michael Jackson song to lure people to Ping

..much like Michael Jackson used Neverland to lure kids to his bed...

And, yes, America, he was a child molester.
