Panasonic Jungle starts US playtests

Panasonic has quietly started up applications in the US to start playtesting the Jungle. The company has sent invitations to Electronista and others to see if they qualify and to narrow down the testing pool. The company doesn't give significant clues as to what will be involved, but the massively multiplayer focus and an age check support beliefs that an online Battlestar Galactica game might be one of the first.

The service is known to be focusing on free games when possible and will likely get away from the retail model of paying just for access, according to a description of the service in the invitation.

"We're committed to the cloud and web-based content, the free-to-play movement, social and community-based gaming, and new forms of digital entertainment," Panasonic said. "We want to enable you to enjoy all of this - anytime, anywhere. So far, the feedback we've received from gamers who have experienced the Jungle has been quite inspiring."

Panasonic hasn't said how soon it planned to launch the Jungle, what it would be capable of or whether there will be any service costs on top of the device itself. The clamshell gaming system is known to use Linux, output over HDMI and take SD cards. It may base some of its gaming on Flash, but the nature of most MMO games might dictate 3D support as well.
