Internal Chrome OS netbooks codenamed after Mario Andretti?

updated 04:50 am EST, Fri November 26, 2010

Chrome OS promises to be Indycar fast

More details have emerged about Google's forthcoming Chrome OS, and its internal test netbooks. According to TechCrunch, evidence has emerged in the Chromium issue tracker that Google is testing two new netbooks, one codenamed "Mario" and the other "Andretti". Given that boot speed is one of the main attractions of the Chrome OS, it is plausible that Google might reference the netbooks internally after the Indycar racing legend.

More detailed reports also suggest that the current build of the OS is also internally codenamed "Indy". The references can be seen in the weblogs pictured below.

Google has promised an announcement on the Chrome OS before the year's end, and it is rumored that it may release at least one netbook under its own brand in limited release before other partners begin delivering their Chrome OS netbooks in 2011.

In other Chrome OS news, Google VP of engineering for Chrome Linus Upson has also indicated in an interview that Google plans on expanding its Chrome OS to handhelds, tablets and TVs. [via TechCrunch]
