Acer unveils 4.8-inch smartphone, seven- and 10-inch tablets

Acer event brings 4.8-inch, 7- and 10-inch tablets

Acer at its special event in New York City today brought out three Android-based devices launching in the future. Highlighting the range is a 4.8-inch smartphone; one of the largest not badged as a tablet, it will have a wide 1024x480 display and should sit at the high end of smartphones with both an eight-megapixel back camera and a 1.3-megapixel camera in the front. Most details are still absent but will bring support for 720p video recording and a six-axis motion sensor.

Its tablets will also be considerably higher-end than the current generation. A seven-inch model will have a 1280x800 display and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor (likely a Snapdragon). A 10-inch model will have the same screen resolution but will trade speed for features. It should have a dual-core 1GHz processor but get a five-megapixel back camera and an HD-capable front camera.

Despite the unveilings, neither the phone nor the tablets are shipping until April of next year, when they're likely to be using Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) along with an updated version of Acer's custom interface. Most competitors, including Apple and RIM, should have dual-core tablets and upgraded features by Acer's launch time. The reason for the delay wasn't clear, and Acer didn't mention any pricing.

The company did mention that it's bringing the already unveiled Liquid Metal to Rogers in Canada but is only in talks with AT&T and T-Mobile.

When asked about tablet sizes at the event, Acer's CEO sidestepped Apple criticism of small tablets and said that a seven-inch tablet is good for e-books.

"So folks ... what do you think of *these*?" says Acer.
"And if the crickets aren't chirping as loudly as they are now come April, we might actually make a few of them."

They think if they introduce products of various sizes one might get lucky. FAIL.
