TiVo outs iPad remote app for Premiere DVRs

TiVo outs iPad remote control app

TiVo this morning unveiled a new iPad remote control app (not yet ready) for its Premiere DVR boxes. The app provides full control over all of the features of the set-top, including a direct replication of TiVo's hardware remote controls if needed, a program guide and interfaces for both Amazon VOD and Netflix. The remote takes a hands-off approach and will keep the interface off of the TV while it's active, keeping the current video on the screen.

Multi-touch comes into play and lets users navigate with gestures and scrubbing through already recorded shows. Viewers can check the show cast and other details without disrupting play, and they can share Facebook or Twitter updates without having to switch to another app. DVR scheduling works both for one-off recordings and Season Passes.

The app should be available in "coming weeks" and needs both the iPad and the TiVo on the same local network. Premiere DVRs will need an update to get full support. Apps for the iPhone and non-Apple platforms weren't mentioned with the release.

    Excellent!

This is certainly a feature I was hoping would happen for the iPad. I'd like to see this come to the Apple TV as well.

    TiVo Premiere only?

Why can't it work on the Series 3 and HD models? Great addition to the TiVo but not enough to make me want to buy a Premiere.

Tivo Series 3 / Tivo HD

It's too bad this doesn't work on the Premiere, but to be fair the Premiere software is a total rewrite of any previous model -- I think we'll need third party iPad app development for anything older than a Premiere, as this helps differentiate the Premiere from earlier models.

    Premiere only?

Because the premiere is their latest OS, so they coded the app for that. Why should they be supporting all their older hardware/OS users? Just because they're too cheap or lazy to get a new box?

Oh, wait. That's the argument for Apple not supporting older hardware. Nevermind.
