Likely needed for AirPlay support
A firmware update for the Apple TV, v4.1, should be released at about 10AM Pacific time today, a report suggests. Although not yet announced by Apple, he update is expected to coincide with the rollout of iOS 4.2. People will have to download any update directly through an Internet-connected Apple TV, using the set-top's Settings menu.
The focus of the update is expected to be on support for AirPlay, which streams music, photos and video from compatible iOS 4.2 devices. The technology should normally operate unsecured, but password protection is said to be an option, along with the alternative of disabling AirPlay completely. Another anticipated feature is VoiceOver support, which should be off by default, but able to read menus and descriptions out loud for the visually impaired.
The update may potentially fix ongoing problems with video output. Some owners of Sony and Philips TVs are experiencing inverted or oddly-tinted graphics, and in some cases none at all. AppleCare has claimed that a fix is in progress.
