Sharp announces 3D Android phones for US in 2011

updated 05:10 am EST, Wed November 17, 2010

Galapagos range and Lynx possibilities

Sharp Japan today announced that it will bring its glasses-free, auto-stereoscopic display equipped Android-based smartphones to the US in 2011. Two of the phones, the Galapagos 003SH and 005SH were recently introduced in Japan on the Softbank network. Both devices run Android 2.2 and offer 3.8-inch displays at a resolution of 800x400.

The phones also sport a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, include Wi-Fi 802.11n and assisted GPS. The candy bar form factor 003SH includes a higher spec 9.6-megapixel camera and shoots video at 720p. The slider form factor 005SH includes a full QWERTY keyboard, but at the expense of its camera, which is still a respectable 8-megapixel resolution.

Also a possibility for the US market is Sharp's recently introduced 3D Lynx handset, which also incorporates a built-in digital tuner.

To highlight the potential of the handsets in the Japanese market, Sharp has made seven 3D movies available for the devices including Shrek, along with seven 3D games with Bio Hazard among the choices. [via 3D-Display-info]
