Samsung hints at Google TV sets at CES

updated 12:15 pm EST, Tue November 16, 2010

Samsung Google TV sets may arrive in January

Samsung today said it would discuss plans to use Google TV on its sets in January. TV group leader Yoon Boo Keun stopped short of committing to launching sets based on the platform at CES, which starts in early January, but implied strongly that it would involve a launch. Samsung is "open" to using the Intel Atom chips needed for Google TV, he told Bloomberg.

The company would be just the second TV manufacturer to adopt Google TV, with Sony being the only launch partner for the release this fall. Most companies have been hesitant both due to the untested nature of the Android-based platform but also the impact it might have on their own sets. Samsung, as well as LG, Sony and most other TV giants, have already developed their own Internet TV interfaces and would be rendering this obsolete while frequently increasing the price.

Only Logitech's Revue and Sony's Internet Blu-ray Player currently offer Google TV independently.
