PS Jailbreak supports latest firmware, more

The PSJailbreak team kicked off the week by announcing that its hack now supports PS3 firmware 3.42, 3.50 and reportedly any future firmware versions. The USB mod allows users to unlock their PS3 to allow unapproved software, and has landed the company in legal trouble from Sony itself. This also allowed users to load other operating systems, such as Linux, again, even after Sony prevented doing so citing security reasons with the PS3 3.21 update.

At the same time, PS Jailbreak launched a new sister website, PSdowngrade, which lets users downgrade their consoles to any previous firmware versions. This does require a console with the original PS Jailbreak software, and PS Jailbreak warns there are many clones that claim compatibility with the software but won't work properly.

The hacks came about after Sony decided to pull alternate OS support. It claimed at the time that it was for security reasons, but most believe it was meant to prevent easy bootlegging using Linux as a backdoor to bypassing copy protection.
