AT&T: Windows Phone 7 devices need certified microSD cards

ATT warns WP7 needs cerfiied storage cards

AT&T in a statement today said the Samsung Focus and other Windows Phone 7 devices would need special microSDHC cards. Removable storage isn't yet officially supported by the mobile OS, but the carrier said users could do a one-time storage upgrade once "Certified for Windows Phone 7" cards were in stores. Faster cards with "optimal performance" are necessary, but current cards don't have that qualifier, according to AT&T.

WP7 can technically expand beyond whatever storage is built-in but doesn't have a way to address a card other than by joining it with the main storage. It also requires wiping the phone and can often be very sensitive to the particularly card, either running unacceptably slowly or damaging data on the card. The card also usually becomes unusable elsewhere.

Focus owners who try to reach the slot are greeted with a "stop!" warning from AT&T that discourages them from inserting a card.

    Locking down the maerket?

Wow this sounds like a troll plan by MS to make proprietary accessories, and close down the market like Apple does with it's phones and it already does with it's XBOX360 and it's HDD's.

Seriously I MS wants to compete in the mobile market it cannot do this, it will be eaten alive by Android. I certainly hope they aren't getting this greedy and this is just some technical issue.
