Live NHL games reach Boxee, PS3 and Roku

NHL GameCenter Live hits Boxee, PS3, Roku

The NHL launched a three-prong effort to get live games on to digital media hubs by offering its GameCenter Live broadcasts on multiple new platforms. Boxee's Mac and Windows apps, the Boxee Box, the PS3 and Roku players now have access to live, streaming hockey games, on-demand versions for 48 hours later and the roughly 500 full games and other condensed games in the league's archive. The game schedules, news and stats are also available.

The same rules apply as elsewhere and only allow watching out-of-market games to protect TV deals.

An annual subscription to GameCenter Live costs $169 per year for full access; access to the NHL Vault archive is available by itself for $5 per month. Boxee and Roku downloads for the app itself appears to be free, but Sony is charging $10 to download the GameCenter app and only waives the up-front price for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

    WHEN?

Will the NHL will FINALLY give up the idiotic local game blackout restrictions?!?!? It particularly sucks not being able to stream live games living in NYC and following both the Rangers and Devils.
(Islanders? Fishsticks! ...and Potvin Beats His Wife!)

If one is willing to pay for their video streaming subscription service why can't we stream local games? The NHL and teams will be making money on that, too, I presume.

    Re: WHEN?

When the cable providers get the money back from the teams in compensation for losing the eyeballs and subscribers to such a system. Which, in turn, will cause the NHL and the teams to demand more money for the streaming, which will piss you off as well.

Perhaps when pro level sports reads the report that blacking out games losses more fans than it gains in seat and memorabilia sales?
