GameStop exec bashes Sony's PSP strategy

updated 07:25 pm EST, Tue November 9, 2010

PSP said to be biggest "disappointment" of 2010

GameStop's vice president of merchandising and marketing, Bob McKenzie, has criticized Sony's business strategy for the PSP handheld. In an interview with Eurogamer, the executive pointed to a "disappointment" over the selection of PSP games that were released this year, compared to the higher number of games that arrived on the market last year.

"I think Sony did a great job two years ago in terms of coming out with a pretty good line-up of PSP offerings and I didn't see that breadth of titles this year," said McKenzie. "And it's still pretty meaningful to consumers."

Separate reports suggest the PSP has failed to live up to Sony's sales expectations. The device faces strong competition from the Nintendo DS and iPod touch. The PSP Go is also said to be struggling to take hold in the market, despite the transition toward Internet-based game downloads mimicking Apple's App Store ecosystem.

McKenzie declined to comment on the rumors surrounding a PSP2 and Android-based PlayStation phone. Although both devices have yet to receive official confirmation, the PSP2 is not expected to be available until late next year.
