Moto Droid 2 Global gets early launch

Earlier than expected, Verizon has launched the Motorola Droid 2 Global. The new version adds both GSM and tri-band HSPA 3G support to roam outside of the US, including at full speed on Canadian carriers. It also represents a performance upgrade: the Global's TI OMAP processor clocks up to 1.2GHz from the original 1GHz.

Other than the options of white and silver colors, the QWERTY slider is similar in most respects to the earlier Droid 2 and revolves around a 3.7-inch, 480x854 touchscreen as well as a five-megapixel camera with 720p video capture. It still comes with Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 and supports Verizon's paid 3G hotspot support. 8GB of storage is built-in, but an 8GB microSDHC card is preloaded to double the capacity.

Verizon is already taking orders for the Droid 2 Global and is selling it for the same $200 on a contract that the earlier model cost when new, though only after a $100 mail-in rebate. The earlier Droid 2 is still available and costs $150 on identical terms.
