Microsoft sues Motorola over Xbox network tech

Microsoft on Tuesday sued Motorola for supposedly charging unnecessarily steep royalties related to the Xbox 360. The suit filed in a Seattle court claimed that Motorola broke good faith with standards companies by gouging on royalties for video decoding and Wi-Fi technology inside Xbox systems. Microsoft was hoping for compensation from Motorola for the lost revenue.

Motorola hadn't commented on the suit as of this afternoon and hadn't said if it would fight the lawsuit or pursue a settlement.

The lawsuit may be part of a pressure tactic against Motorola, which Microsoft sued over Android patents. Microsoft has claimed that it owns patents relating to the mobile OS but has been using Android phone makers as proxies to attack Google. The Redmond, Washington-based firm made a deal with HTC for Android royalties that may have been helped by HTC's existing plans to make Windows Phone 7 devices where Motorola is still committed to Google.
