LaCie taps Philippe Starck for USB 3.0 mobile drive

updated 02:55 pm EST, Tue November 9, 2010

LaCie intros Starck Mobile USB 3.0 drive

LaCie drew on well-known French designer Philippe Starck today to rework its external drive design. The Starck Mobile USB 3.0 has a uniquely rounded aluminum shell that's both more visually distinctive and also more advantageous for the drive itself. At 2mm (0.08in) thick, the drive is resistant to mild shocks and gets a passive heatsink to keep the drive cool.

Full speed only comes when using the USB 3.0 ort and its peak 5Gbps speeds, but the drive is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 and works with both Macs and Windows PCs. Buyers get a year's worth of cloud backup from LaCie's own Wuala service with 10GB of space; a Backup Assistant is available for those who don't want to use a utility such as Time Machine.

Only one 500GB capacity is available for the disk, which carries a smaller than usual premium for such a drive at $110.

    Stay away....

LaCie drives, 10 years ago had a well-deserved reputation for quality. Today they are attractive pieces of shat with the highest failure rates in the industry. Stay well away.

    Nice...

Nice... Is USB3, compatible with USB2, and is Philippe Stark design.

@MyRightEye: Until now all my Lacie Disks never give me more problem then any other disk brands. I think you had just bad luck. But, just for safe, you should use both of your eyes! :-)
