E Ink details Triton color ePaper

updated 04:50 am EST, Tue November 9, 2010

Faster performance, stunning battery life

E Ink today detailed the technical capabilities of its new Triton color ePaper that made its debut on the color Hanvon e-reader yesterday. A video (included below) explains that devices using the display will get an impressive 30 days of battery life versus about 10 hours for equivalent devices using LCD displays. It achieves this feat by reflecting external light, which bounce back from the display through a UV filter that gives the images their color.

By omitting the need for backlighting, the display is able to achieve its significant power savings. By reflecting external light, the device actually works better in bright outdoor scenarios. The downside, is that in dark situations, the display will need artificial external light sources, much like monochrome E Ink e-readers do today.

The Triton ePaper can display thousands of colors, but still gives users the option of viewing up to sixteen shades of grey scale if desired. It is capable of showing simple animations, but does not support a refresh rate high enough for displaying video in its present form.
