BlackBerry Monaco may be real Storm3; 9900 still alive?

updated 11:25 am EST, Tue November 9, 2010

BlackBerry Monaco and Montana surface

Two BlackBerry phones once thought dropped have reappeared but with signs that they weren't the same as once thought. The Storm3, once believed canceled, is now said to have persisted and is now codenamed the Monaco, BBLeaks said. The design purportedly killed earlier was a mild refresh of the Storm2 and not the entirely new model.

While a possible photo of the Monaco was called into question, the new rumor suggests it may be accurate. The design would use a much larger 3.7-inch display and would keep the trackpad from other BlackBerry phones. The design may also give RIM an opening to use a new processor and other upgrades rather than reusing older chips, as was the case in the Torch.

RIM's tentative BlackBerry Dakota (also known as the 9900) has also reportedly surfaced again as the Montana. Little has emerged of what might have changed, but the design was originally going to have the Bold's fixed QWERTY design with a touchscreen.

None of these devices are unlikely to show until sometime in 2011, although the 9900 has appeared in Vodafone Germany's inventory system and has hinted that it might come sooner next year rather than later.
