Samsung shoots for 40m smartphones for 2011

Samsung mobile lead Shin Jong-kyun told Japan's Nikkei BP today that the company expects to ship 40 million smartphones in 2011. The number would double the 20 million Samsung is hoping for this year. Most of its effort would lean on the Galaxy S, about 10 million of which could be sold through all of 2010.

The release could step up competition with Apple, which pushed past 10 million phones a quarter for the first time this summer. Samsung would still benefit even if Apple holds off any advances since the company has been profiting from Apple component purchases. It supplies flash memory and LCDs to Apple and has been contracted to make the A4 processor in most Apple handhelds, although it's now a custom design rather than an off-the-shelf part.

Samsung has been one of the most consistently growing phone manufacturers, but until this year most of that growth came from conventional phones.

Along with phone claims, Samsung also dropped hints that it would expand its tablet line next year and would soon have a 10-inch parallel to the Galaxy Tab. Little is known about its features other than previous remarks that Samsung may wait until Honeycomb to have a properly tablet-optimized version of Android.

The world has gone smartphone crazy since

the iPhone reared its head. Samsung is talking some pretty big numbers. I wonder if there's going to be enough consumers to go around. Apple is going to have to go well beyond the hardware aspect in order to stay in competition. They'd better get some more media content deals and offer plenty of cloud storage for consumers.

    may well

And yes, Samsung sees the need for a range of tablets rather than one size fits all by Apple.
