Panasonic makes Lumix GF2 official, 3D lens

Panasonic tonight unveiled the Lumix GF2. The Micro Four Thirds camera is reportedly the lightest and one of the smallest swappable lens models in the world, having shed 19 percent of its size and seven percent of its weight. The pop-up flash remains and is designed to improve bounce flash results for close shots. It's also compatible with Panasonic's new 3D interchangeable lens, the Lumix G 12.5mm f12, making it capable of taking photos in 3D.

Inside, the GF2 runs Panasonic's latest imaging processor, the Venus Engine FHD, which now can record video in 1080i at 60fps alongside 720p, also at 60fps. A 23-point autofocusing system also gives it precision more like DSLRs. It uses the same 12-megapixel MOS sensor as the G2 and has a relatively large three-inch, 460,000-pixel touchscreen LCD to compose shots.

As with the GF1 it ultimately replaces, the GF2 will ship in kit form with either an 18mm f2.5 pancake lens or Panasonic's 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 standard zoom. Both are unofficially expected to cost around $900, while stores will get their units in January 2011. Pricing should follow by mid-to-late December.
