Tech said to be deadzone-free

AU Optronics has announced that it will showcase new 3D display technology at the FPD International expo. The company has built several panels claimed to be the first to display 3D imagery at all angles without requiring users to wear 3D glasses.

The naked eye 3D technology utilizes an eye-tracking system to monitor viewers' eye movements. The system reportedly overcomes the limitations of earlier technology, which required users to stay directly in front of the screen center to view 3D images.

The panels, which are being demonstrated on a 15.6-inch notebook and 10.1-inch tablet, provide controls that quickly switch between 2D and 3D settings. The company claims users should also be able to read text in the 3D mode, as 2D and 3D content can be displayed concurrently.

AUO expects both panel sizes to enter mass production in the third quarter of 2011, although the pricing structure remains unclear.
