EA admits having had PSP2 access

EA gives first sign of PSP2 in works

Game developer EA in an interview late Tuesday acknowledged that it had seen at least details of Sony's PSP2. Senior VP Patrick Soderlund wouldn't say whether it included the actual hardware or target specifications but noted that a software firm had to have access. Silence was necessary because of an established relationship with Sony, he explained to CVG.

"Obviously as a developer we have had that [access] -- but I'm not allowed to talk about it," Soderlund said.

Rumors have been circulating that Sony has been showing the PSP2 to developers to get them ready for development, but the exact nature of the design has never been made public. Some of the most aggressive rumors have given the sequel as much power as an Xbox 360 as well as a backside touchpad and other additions. Performance isn't likely to be as high, but it may use Android to run the same games and apps as the known PlayStation phone.

Sony has never confirmed the PSP sequel and unofficially isn't expected to ship it until late 2011. Original PSP sales have been crashing as the combination of Apple's iPod touch and Nintendo's DSi series have left few opting for Sony hardware.
