Micro SATA SSD drives get smaller, faster; hit 3.3mm thick

updated 09:55 pm EDT, Wed November 3, 2010

1.8-inch drives up to 400GB now available

Foremay Incorporated, a leading OEM manufacturer of industrial Solid State Disk (SSD) drives, announced today it is shipping slim 1.8-inch micro SATA SSD devices in volume to commercial, industrial and military clients. In addition to being small, the read/write speeds and thinness of the 1.8-inch class of SSD devices is improving; the company now offers capacities up to 400 gigabytes, speeds of 280 megabytes per second, and form factors that include a "bare" drive just 3.3 millimeters (0.13 inches) thick.

Housing-less (also known as "bare") SSD drives have recently garnered more attention thanks to their use in Apple's new MacBook Air design, where space is at a premium. As SSDs have matured as a technology, the ability to create them in non-traditional forms has expanded. While the Air uses a custom-designed Toshiba SSD only 2.45 millimeters thick, it is a good example of the growing ability of manufacturers to design custom-sized SSD drives in forms that platter-based disks cannot employ.

Foremay says their 1.8-inch SSD drives are the world's fastest in their class, achieving random read/write IOPS at 4KB up to 30,000/15,000 and sustained read/write of 280MB/second. The company offers three versions; the SC199 model which features industrial operating temperature range, a five-millimeter thickness and metal housing, the EC188 for business use, and the OC177 "bare" drive with its 3.3 millimeter thickness, rated for both industrial and commercial operating temperatures. Prices vary depending on capacity and quantity.
