International Mac mini prices drop

updated 09:30 am EDT, Tue November 2, 2010

US, Canada excluded from cuts

Prices for the Mac mini have been slashed in many regions around the world, Apple is said to have confirmed. Macerkopf notes that in Germany, for example, the cost of a base-level 2.4GHz Mini with a 320GB hard drive has fallen €100 to sit at €709. A Snow Leopard Server edition of the computer now starts at €999, as compared to a previous €1,149.

Notably, however, no cuts have been made at Apple's American and Canadian online stores. US prices are still $699 and $999 for regular and server versions; in Canada the same models cost $749 and $1,099 CAD, respectively. The price drops may signify an attempt to make the Mini a more reasonable proposition overseas; translated into US dollars, the 2.4GHz Mini's new cost is still $995 in Germany.

    Unloved US dollar

I'm surprised (not really) it has taken this long. With the value of the US dollar taking a huge dive in recent months, it costs less to buy anything from Apple or anything else you need pay for in US currency. Now that the Australian dollar is 1 for 1 against the US, it makes no sense that we're paying $4900 for a mid-range Mac Pro while the same machine can be picked up for $3500 in the US.

    Just fair

I congratulate Apple for this attitude.

In Europe we where paying a very expensive hardware. Apple converted the Apple products prices to 1$ = 1€ (or more), but the Euro is 1.4 Dollars. So is just fair to reduce the price of Apple products in all Europe.

    Mac Mini price drop??

Is this Apple response to "Fight the Nettops", or "Fend off Nettops", or "Response to the Nettop threat"?

Every time someone drops the price on one of their products, somehow it turns into them "Fighting" a competing Apple product.

Love the dramatic headlines. What a bunch of BS.

    Just a commment.
The price in Australia includes 10% GST.
The price in the US is not with sales tax included.
If you buy that $3500 Mac Pro in New York, it would cost almost $3900.
Still quite a bit less than Australia, but it does make the numbers seem less terrible.

The same Mac Pro would cost about 5.050 USD.
Man, I just love the 25% VAT we have.....
