Samsung Galaxy Tab teardown shows huge battery

updated 01:55 pm EDT, Tue November 2, 2010

Dual speakers contained in large housings

Samsung's Galaxy Tab has already been dissected ahead of its launch in North American markets. The teardown, posted on jkkMobile, reveals a massive battery, which dominates the housing interior. The 14.8 W-h lithium-ion cell is claimed to reach approximately eight hours of typical usage, compared to the iPad's 10-hour rating on a 25 W-h battery.

Aside from the battery, the housing also holds two speaker boxes for stereo audio playback. Internal construction appears to be bolstered by a composite frame. Unlike some tablets with a cramped component layout, Samsung appears to have left a considerable amount of empty space between the electronics and the edge of the frame.

Although the battery is connected to the board using a detachable cord, opening the case is said to be a daunting task. The plastic cover reportedly requires quite a bit of force to pry off, before users can access the screws.

An iSuppli analysis suggests the Galaxy Tab likely costs approximately $205 in raw parts, including a $57 display and $10 battery. The device has been likened to a larger version of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones.

    Needs a Bigger Battery

The Samsung Galaxy is great, but it needs a bigger battery. I had to purchase an external battery pack from Phonesuit. I hope the next version has better battery power.

Some other battery packs that seem good are Scosche goBAt and Newtrend
