T-Mobile races to compete with $10 data, $15 tethering plans

updated 09:55 am EDT, Mon November 1, 2010

T-Mobile offers 15 dollar data and tethering plans

T-Mobile this morning responded to cheaper plans from AT&T and Verizon with new data plans of its own. The company is now offering a 200MB plan for light smartphone use at prices below others. Those willing to re-sign a contract can pay as little as $10 a month; those unwilling to extend their terms can get the same bandwidth for $15 per month.

Unlike AT&T, T-Mobile is keeping its unlimited $30 data plan. The carrier has usually implemented a soft cap where use past 5GB is potentially subject to throttling if a given user is bogging down the network.

Tethering is also now an official option and gives those with Android or other platforms that support it a carrier-sanctioned way of sharing the connection, including Wi-Fi sharing on devices like the T-Mobile G2. Adding it requires both the regular $30 smartphone plan to avoid hitting caps quickly as well as a $15 plan, which raises the price but also costs less than equivalents from AT&T and Verizon.

All of the new plan changes should take effect November 3.

    Sigh, T-Mobile is still clueless

I doubt T-Mobile will draw in that much new business. These not-so-new schemes illustrates what's wrong with data billing in the cellular industry as a whole. It's this bizarre policy of forcing consumers to pay for more bandwidth than they use, bandwidth that's thrown away at the end of each month.

How would you feel if to eat at all you had to agree to pay a local supermarket some fixed amount per month for the 'right' to buy food there. How would you feel if no supermarket offered any other sort of plan other than a very pricey "all you can eat" scheme. Buy less than that fixed amount, perhaps because you were on vacation, and you're still charged the same. Buy more, however, and you're dunned with penalties in an effort to force you into a more expensive, fixed-rate plan. That's today's cellular industry. It stinks.

If T-Movle really wanted to get our attention, they would offer a reasonably priced pre-pay scheme based on actual bandwidth used without any fixed per-day, per week or per month charges. Consumers wouldn't be forced to guess how much bandwidth they would use. Use a little, pay little. Use a lot, pay a lot. That's fair billing and that would be no different from one of the plans that T-Mobile already offer in pre-pay voice.

FFC just whacked Verizon, hopefully ATT next.

The cost of unlimited texting plans is insane and out of control. I know it's a "high demand" product-now- and the price has nothing to do with the technology but it's getting horrid.

    Data Plan - REALLY

The cost of my data plan with AT&T is $30 per month and $15 for the tethering - this is the same as T-Mobile... How is it cheaper??

I pay $15 per month for unlimited texting for 6 phones... I don't see this as expensive... What I see as expensive is no data family plan for the iPhone!!! You have 6 iPhone and you pay $180 in data... and one of the phones doesn't even use the data!! (It's Grandpa's) I can't turn the data off so that if he needs AAA, he can use the app and they can locate him (or if he gets lost, we can find him). I would gladly pay $60 per month for a shared data plan!

What I see as unreal is that data transmission and phone transmission are the same. Data is data. If it wasn't that the towers and the equipment cost so much to install, maintain and run, we would all have $15 cell phone that did it all. But no, we have all this text messaging and data c*** going on for NO REASON - the tower in Orlando goes down during a Magic game kuz everyone and their mother is posting photos on-line with their phone - REALLY!! You can't wait til you get home??? REALLY!! God - sometimes I feel like Seth and Amy on SNL... Take cell phone texting away from children under the age of 12 and set a limit on the one for the teenagers to like 300 per month (that you can set on the phone as a parent thru software - no extra fees) and make it so that people can't text or browse while a vehicle is in motion and SEE just how much tower bandwidth is opened up so that AT&T doesn't have to spend money putting up more towers just to handle the DATA LOAD!!
