iOS 4.2 GM tweaks multitasking toolbar, MobileMe login

updated 10:35 pm EDT, Mon November 1, 2010

Public release expected soon

The iOS 4.2 golden master, which was seeded to developers earlier in the day, brings several differences from the previous betas. The iPad's multitasking toolbar has been tweaked, allowing users quick access to volume and brightness controls. Playback controls also include a new button that activates the AirPlay streaming audio functionality.

Aside from the multitasking bar, the GM appears to allow MobileMe sign-in using just an Apple ID. It remains unclear if the company is moving toward a consolidated login or making the MobileMe service free for all users.

Apple is expected to release the final version in the near future, potentially early in the November launch time-frame that was previously promised. [via MacRumors]

iPod touches out in the cold

Yes, but is 4.2 going to fix the oft-reported high battery drain when a 2-gen iPod touch sleeps with WiFi on? I'm tired of having to put mine into airline mode every night to have any battery life left in the morning. That didn't happen with iOS 3 and it's not happening with my iPhone 3G with iOS 4. And if it's a router problem (Apple's most recent excuse), then it's a problem with an Apple Airport Extreme router with the latest firmware.

I starting to wonder if anyone at Apple actually tested 2-gen iPod touches before they released iOS 4. No multi-tasking. No Bluetooth keyboard. About the only new features are either trivial (folders for icons) or annoying (this battery drain).

    watermark

    Hey Dean,

You may wish to consider a watermark on your photos.... or some sort of legal action. Honestly, if people are stealing your artwork and claiming as their own, and without your permission, that is downright scummy.

You mean like how Dean posts screenshots of beta software under an NDA without Apple permission?
