Researchers build .1mm-thick flexible AMOLED display

updated 06:25 pm EDT, Fri October 29, 2010

Display measures 6 inches

Engineers from Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) have managed to build a flexible AMOLED display measuring 6 inches. The technology, named FlexUPD, is claimed to enable a folding radius of 5cm or less, while the display measures just 0.1mm thick.

Unlike earlier previews of flexible display technology, FlexUPD is said to be strong enough to withstand repeated folding. The institute claims each display can survive up to 15,000 cycles between flat and rolled states.

Other companies appear to be developing similar technology that may bring durability up to a level that can be considered for mass production. Liquavista recently demonstrated its "unbreakable" flexible display, which is allegedly capable of showing color video at low power. Other companies, including Sony and LG, are working on flexible e-paper displays.

ITRI claims its FlexUPD tech will prove to be a simple and cheap option for mass producing thin, flexible displays. The institute has yet to provide pricing estimates or a time-frame for production, however. [via OLED-Info]
