Costco to drop iTunes gift card sales on Saturday

updated 01:00 pm EDT, Fri October 29, 2010

Conflict over iPad expands

Bulk retailer Costco will drop sales of discounted iTunes cards as of this Saturday, a report claims. A source for iLounge remarks that while it's uncertain if the decision will affect all Costco outlets worldwide, it should impact all North American locations. The move is thought to be an extension of a continuing row with Apple over the iPad, which is absent from Costco stores but which Apple did allow at other big-box retailers like Best Buy, Walmart and Target.

Earlier this month Costco is said to have begun plans to drop iPods as a response. The source elaborates that while iPods are still being sold for the time being, this will only last until current inventories are depleted. Only a policy change should result in more stock after that point.

As the owner of a business I learned a long time ago to not let emotion decide business policies. It works against you in the end.

    If true ...

... this would probably be because Costco wants to sell the iPad at a discount, something Apple hasn't allowed even Wal-Mart to do. If they let Costco do it they have to let Wal-Mart do it, etc.

Frankly, selling the iPad at Wal-Mart, much as I loathe that company, will do more for getting the Apple "concept" into the minds of regular consumers. Not that we shouldn't be able to have both, but if it's a choice ... Wal-Mart is more about preaching to someone other than the choir.

    iPad sales requirements

there are specific requirements for the sales area in order for a business to be approved for iPad sales. it isn't too major, but I believe it requires a table of certain dimensions and that iPads be on display in a functional state.

    Table requirement... none in Costco

All Apple products in Costco never have table. They are all fake cardboards with picture of iPods on it and they are all lining up in a box which is stacked on top of each other. You just pick up the cardboard and bring it to the cashier. After paying the cashier, you go to the stock room to pick up the real package.

People who use gift cards care

The gift cards are not only regularly discounted, it's also marked down to clear the stock. You'll never find a sale like that elsewhere.

Costco is acting like a babie who isn't getting candy. Do you want some cheese to go with that whine? Grow the h*** up
