11-inch MacBook Air cleared by TSA to stay in bags

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Thu October 28, 2010

Puts Air in league with netbooks

The 11-inch MacBook Air can stay in a bag while being taken through airport security, the Transportation Security Administration has ruled. Because the computer is "smaller than a standard-size laptop," according to TSA spokesman Nicholas Kimball, it does not have to be scanned separately during the X-ray process. Normally, policies require larger electronics to be taken out of a bag so a scanner can get a clearer shot.

The decision puts the 11-inch Air in the same league as netbooks, and should allow owners to pass through screening faster. Rules for whether or not the 13-inch Air might be allowed to stay in a bag have yet to be established, however. "If someone has a lot of stuff in their bag, it's sometimes difficult to get a clear view of it," Kimball elaborates. "It might need additional screening."

    yeah, right

Given the TSA's inability to tell its own staff what the rules are on any screening procedure, I'll believe this is possible when I see it. Preferably I'll find out when someone besides me attempts it and doesn't get swarmed.

    Haha!

Good luck with that. The one thing the TSA is consistent about is inconsistent application of their own rules. Every airport I've been to since I got my iPad has required me to take it out after seeing it in the Xray machine in my bag. I just take it out by default now. Security lines are so slow it doesn't really matter.

    Don't waste your time

Just get it out and put it into the tray, because they are not going to be able to tell the difference anyway.

    Okay, whatever

I can't even get my 9" netbook through security without someone yelling at me to take it out and send it back through.

The TSA's X-Ray Scanners Are Not The Problem ...

... it's the TSA's human (or "human") scanners.

The TSA is run by loudmouthed security guards on power trips. It doesn't matter what the rules are, they will do what they can to make your life miserable.
