Unlocked iPhone comes to Germany

updated 09:25 am EDT, Thu October 28, 2010

Arrives on heels of end to exclusivity

Apple is now selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 and 3GS in its German retail and online stores. An 8GB 3GS is €519, while 16 and 32GB iPhone 4s are €629 and €739, respectively. Although a 3GS should ship in one to two weeks, both iPhone 4 models have a minimum two-week wait, in contrast with the US.

The German iPhone market has only just opened up. O2 and Vodafone began carrying the device on Wednesday, marking an end to an exclusive arrangement held by T-Mobile since 2007. Many European countries already have multiple iPhone carriers, one of the first having been France, where legal rulings paved the way. The US should soon get a second carrier in the form of Verizon, most likely in January.
