White iPhone 4 cancelled, blamed on camera?

updated 01:05 pm EDT, Wed October 27, 2010

White iPhone 4 delay said permanent, camera-bound

The decision to delay the white iPhone 4 to spring 2011 may be a sign of a more permanent decision to drop it, a rumor contended on Wednesday. The company allegedly now has no plans to ship the different color at all with the current generation and is instead holding off until the next-generation iPhone. Manufacturing associated with BGR's source were also described as unusually silent and wouldn't confirm that it was a production issue.

Apple hasn't responded to the rumors, but its statement was worded in a way that mentioned only the iPhone and not the iPhone 4 as an individual model.

While not explained in this leak, a separate rumor has alleged that the absence of white may be an inherent design issue rather than the color consistency issues implied before. The white paint combined with the glass supposedly allows too much light to leak in and also tends to blow out photos, since the light bouncing off of the white surface overwhelms the subject.

Apple only learned of the problem late into development at a covert facility for testing case compatibility, when checking early cases revealed the problem, Cult of Mac's tips maintained. The device creator is thought to have tried isolating the camera sensor from the light, but it may require the next iPhone to properly resolve.

Both of the claims are unverified. Apple has so far only said in the past that it was tougher to build the iPhone 4 with the white color than expected, but its decision to delay the white version three times has implied that any issue was much more difficult to resolve than usual.

    Oh nonsense...

If you look at your iPhone 4, you'll see the lens is totally isolated from the phone's glass.

Some cases I've put on the iPhone changed the photo quality when the flash was enabled. Not sure the root cause, but removing the case improved results noticeably.

You'd be foolish to buy a white iPhone 4 at this point anyhow. Anything with this much delay and rework is a lemon to be sure!

    It's better than...

Apple releasing it with any kind of problem. After seeing the backlash Apple took for the death grip, I'd say this is a smart move.
