Apple delays white iPhone until spring 2011

Apple pushes white iPhone until next model

Apple tonight said it was delaying any future white iPhones until spring 2011. The color had already been pushed back to an end of year window and now isn't likely to appear until the fifth-generation iPhone is in stores. Company representative Trudy Muller wouldn't give a reason for the delay but apologized to those who had hoped for an alternative to black.

"We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again," she said.

While never publicly confirmed, the issue has largely been pinned on problems with inconsistent color and quality. Lens Technology has allegedly had trouble getting the same white hue on both the glass surfaces and the home button while still meeting the production levels Apple would need to supply white iPhone 4 models. Previous versions were plastic and could use much more established color techniques.

Apple last had a single color for its most advanced iPhone back with the original 2007 model, when aluminum was the only choice. The company is still showing a white model in its product gallery.

    Oh well, iPhone 5 then

I waited 6 weeks and then bit the bullet. Glad I did, the iPhone 4, once jailbroken and things like LockInfo and bite SMS are installed, is the best phone on the market.

I'm surprised they haven't mentioned the piece of s*** CDMA carrier they usually believe will get it. Perhaps this site is finally wising up and realizing Apple is a good company thus, will never release a product to a pathetic monopoly like Verisuck or Sprint.

No reason to delay because of color when Apple could produce iPod in different flavors at no time.

How good is a design that can't be manufactured? This is a perfect example of form over function. Apple have become obsessed with the "pretty". Stupid!

Why make something that's ugly? Is it worth it just to say "we've released every option we planned to"? By the way - the function is there, the form is Black.

    Re: What?

What are you talking about? We're not talking about function here. The color is only about form. Apple had no problem manufacturing function - they've only had a problem with this form.

Function is already available - in black form.

But it shows Apple cares more about 'form' than worrying about such things as "Um, will we be able to actually produce it?"

No, it doesn't - they are actually producing the iPhone 4. I would say that you are correct if they delayed the planned release (with an also announced release date) because they couldn't work out their color problems.
On a side note - at least when Apple imagineers something and tells the world about it, they actually build and sell them, just maybe not with the aesthetic options people want. Most other companies imagine what they think people will want, tell the world about it, then s**** around for a couple years trying to make something that might remotely resemble what they announced, even if it doesn't have any useful functions that were announced, but the colors are good enough, and sometimes the product is aesthetically pleasing!
