Microsoft releases Messenger for Mac 8

Latest Messenger now out of beta testing


Microsoft has finally released Messenger for Mac 8, the latest version of the communication utility. The update maintains a focus on Office integration for Windows Live users, which excludes the gaming and social features recently added to Messenger 2011 for Windows machines.

Messenger 8 allows users to collaborate with friends on Windows or Mac computers, cellphones, or Hotmail e-mail. Aside from instant messaging, the software also provides options for video calls or audio communication.

The latest version of Messenger for Mac will be offered later this week alongside Microsoft's Office for Mac 2011 lineup, while a standalone version is already available as a free download.

    Wouldn't it be simpler...

    ...if Microsoft just either (a) told Apple how to build Messenger capability into iChat or else (b) made a plugin for iChat for their service (assuming that's possible)? It's like they took every way the appearance and layout of the iChat GUI could possibly be modified without altering the capability, and made it uglier.

    wtf

    wtf.. an installer, really? Estimated space required: 93 MB?? The only reason I'm installing this is because aMSN has really poor transfer speed and doens't really work with webcam....

    My chat life used to be tied down to the Microsoft network because I have family in mexico and any latin american country you go to is as a whole MS dominated. Luckily skype came along and due to MS's total lack of care for being cross platform, we all decided to live headache free waaaaay back in time and so this, though might have changed my history if it were introduced way back when, is now irrelevant not only for me but for all of my friends and family who found skype to be superior. That's what you get for being closed minded I guess.
