Condé Nast plans to use Adobe's tablet publishing tool

updated 06:55 pm EDT, Mon October 25, 2010

Existing apps to be reworked using Adobe software

Condé Nast has announced that it will use Adobe's publishing tools for upcoming tablet editions, rather than taking its own approach. The company has already been using Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite for Wired and The New Yorker, while the in-house methods were used to create iPad apps for GQ, Vanity Fair and Glamour.

Apple's evolving App Store rules had initially forced the publisher to rework its Wired app to comply with restrictions. Although the magazine was created using Flash and then converted using a cross-compiler, the company switched to a method that required thousands of image files and hundreds of megabytes in total data for each issue.

Condé Nast CTO Joe Simon suggests Adobe's tools will allow the company to "achieve the 'author once, publish anywhere' goal," which will eventually involve a variety of devices and platforms.

The decision represents a small victory for Adobe, after the company's conflict with Apple over Flash on iOS pushed some developers to seek alternatives for publishing. Despite the lack of direct Flash support on iOS, Adobe has continued to release developer tools that allow companies to create Flash-based content and automatically cross-compile it for iOS and other platforms.
