Google staff hints Android 2.3 is Gingerbread

Google's upcoming Gingerbread release of Android may be just a modest iteration of Android 2 based on a comment made by a Google worker. The statement, made at the end of September but discovered today, told those worried about a corporate Wi-Fi fix that Android 2.3 was coming next, suggesting that it and not 3.0 was the future version. He didn't give clues as to features at the time other than that it was a "major release."

The small version change would support recent screenshots and videos that show a relatively conservative update on the outside. Most of its features known so far would be additions like video chat and visual effects. A release of the sort would cast doubts on Android's tablet plans, since many are depending on a new OS to get a tablet-friendly interface.

The possibility exists that 2.3 could be launched side-by-side with 3.0 to handle certain devices, but Google hasn't followed this pattern so far.
