Sony hits 2.5m PlayStation Moves, runs low

Sony today said it had shipped 2.5 million PlayStation Move controllers in just a month. About one million have arrived in the US while another 1.5 million reached Europe. The sales rate was also billed as very high, to the point where Sony's hardware marketing lead John Koller told the LATimes the Move was often at or near shortages.

"We're basically shipping every unit we can make," he said.

He credited a relatively wide range of 24 games that included both 'serious' games as well as the family games that have often been associated with motion controllers. Microsoft's imminent Kinect will mostly focus on casual games, in part because the camera-only system isn't always as precise as needed for shooting and other similar games.

The win would be an important one for Sony. Its PS3 sales numbers are unknown now that the NPD has chosen to mask the data except for corporate customers, but it has been slowly improving as better prices and higher capacities have reached the lineup. Nintendo, whose success with the Wii was the impetus behind the Move, has been seeing its own sales drop even after price cuts and game bundles.
