T-Mobile G2 overclocked to 1.42GHz, crushes Nexus One

T-Mobile G2 hits 1.42GHz in overclock test

A post on the XDA-Developers board has confirmed that T-Mobile's G2 can successfully overclock well past its 800MHz stock speed. Forum member coolbho3000 has crafted an overclock-ready Android kernel that can boost it to 1.42GHz and has offered video (below) as proof. The tester found that it could run even faster but grew unstable on the individual G2 he was using.

With the added speed, the G2 has been benchmarked running roughly twice as quickly as the Nexus One, which uses a 1GHz Snapdragon but from an earlier generation. A stock G2 is estimated to run about as quickly as the Nexus One even with the lower clock speed.

The Linpack test has the smartphone putting out 46.5 megaflops of total performance, and Native Benchmark has it completing a test in as little as 196ms.

Many Android phones are overclockable with modified code, but most have relatively little headroom or produce little benefits. The results with the G2 suggest that it's clocked at 800MHz only to reduce its cost and that chipmaker Qualcomm could easily scale the design to much higher speeds.
