Netflix says streaming only US may arrive early

Netflix chief Reed Hastings in comments on his company's latest results hinted that the firm may hasten plans for streaming-only US access. As long as results were as strong as expected, the CEO believed Netflix could have a disc-free option later in the fall. The Canadian debut of the strategy was very successful and also played a role, Hastings said.

Streaming could become the "core offering" in the US with its adoption, he added. Since Netflix already has Blu-ray and DVD, physical movies would simply become an option, much as electing to get Blu-ray is currently considered a bonus.

The company's Watch Instantly service only has a portion of the catalog from its total service, but it has become popular simply through the variety of devices and the low cost compared to per-title rentals. It can play on dedicated media hubs like the new Apple TV and Roku players but also sits on the iPad and iPhone and many current Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles.
