Apple's 14.1 million iPhones crush BlackBerry in summer

Apple's 14.1 million iPhones blow past BlackBerry

Apple in its quarterly results revealed that it had blown past RIM in smartphone sales. The company's 14.1 million iPhone shipments in the summer were enough for it to trump RIM's 12.1 million BlackBerries over its own summer quarter, which finished a month earlier. The upset is one of the few seen since the iPhone went on sale, as Apple so far is only known to have passed RIM once early into the iPhone's history.

The results could create a moment of crisis for RIM, as it has already been losing share to the combined effect of the iPhone as well as Android. BlackBerry performance has usually counted on the company's sheer distribution reach to push sales. The carrier has depended on having a footprint in virtually every North American carrier and multiple carriers in others.

Apple has been limited to just one carrier in the US but has usually had strong performance outside of the country, where both Google and RIM have historically been weaker.

RIM doesn't have any immediate signs of a turnaround but has yet to see full sales results for the BlackBerry Torch, which only expanded sales outside of AT&T in September. Apple, meanwhile, has said that it's still facing iPhone 4 shortages and expected that it could have sold even more in the summer had supply allowed.

    The champ's been unseated, ya...

but I dunno if selling 15% more is "crushing" them....
