Lexmark Genesis AIO printer uses camera for instant scans

updated 05:30 pm EDT, Fri October 15, 2010

Lexmark Genesis printer has camera, upright design

Lexmark today sought to shake up the normally very conservative world of printers by introducing the Genesis. The design is unusual just by standing upright but is more unique still by using a 10-megapixel camera for scanning. It can capture the entire frame almost instantly and can convert the scan to a full image in as little as three seconds.

A 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen is equally uncommon and provides both a clearer way of previewing prints and scans as well as an avenue for Internet features, including storage, Evernote calendars, TripIt flight info and Lexmark has a service of its own to print photos from Twitter links and (in November) Facebook galleries.

The printer itself is a typical inkjet, but it has duplex printing and separate ink tanks. It doesn't need any separate hardware to get on the local network with 802.11n Wi-Fi to hop on to wireless networks.

Lexmark doesn't plan to ship the Genesis until early next year and anticipates it shipping for $399.
